Over the course of two hundred years Ghent University has built up a strong scientific reputation. It has an extensive track record in the area of internationally recognized research work. For example, Ghent Professor Corneel Hyemans was the only Flemish person to be awarded the Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine and Friedirch August Kekule was the founder of modern organic and analytical chemistry.

Today biotechnology at Ghent University enjoys an international reputation with founding professors such as Jozef Schell, Marc Van Montagu and Walter Flers. Ghent Unviersty also carries out leading research in areas such as biochemistry, material science, medicine, history and psychology.

This strong sceintific tradition does not only belong to the home campus. Ghent University has established five research centres in its global campus in Korea, and provided valuable researchers. The research centres and labs at Ghent University breathes new life into education.
