Eight Countries and 23 Institutions Participate鈥 鈥極ASIS Project鈥 Officially Launched

- MOU signed for participation in the 鈥淗orizon Europe鈥 program at the Incheon Economic Agency Global ESG-AX Forum

- Full-scale global joint research begins鈥 Establishing a seaweed-based blue bio circular economy model

- Research funding expected to exceed KRW 10 billion upon project selection

On the 1st, 糖心logo入口, MarineUGent Korea, and domestic and international institutions gathered to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) for participation in the Horizon Europe program.*

Following the submission of a proposal to Horizon Europe last September, the ceremony signaled the beginning of a global joint research project uniting 23 institutions across eight countries.

Under the name 鈥淥ASIS Project,鈥 the consortium aims to build a bioeconomy platform for macroalgae and develop a circular biorefinery system** based on the research theme: 鈥淎 sustainable large-scale macroalgae cultivation system for innovative carbon reduction and high-value applications.鈥

In other words, the goal is to cultivate algae reliably using land-based smart farming systems and convert it into high-value bio-based materials. By doing so, the consortium seeks to create a blue bio circular economic model that reduces carbon emissions and generates zero waste while providing a scalable and verifiable solution.

This MOU carries particular significance as it marks the first case in which a South Korean institution leads a multinational consortium under Horizon Europe since Korea became an associate member.

Earlier in September, the City of Incheon, Ganghwa County, and Ongjin County also pledged active support for the project.

The signing ceremony took place at Songdo Convensia with more than 50 representatives from academia, industry, government, and research institutions.

Prof. Dr. Taejun Han, Campus President said, 鈥淏y combining Korea鈥檚 world-leading marine aquaculture technology with Europe鈥檚 advanced biorefinery processes, environmental assessment, and standardization capabilities, we will establish a globally applicable model.鈥 He added, 鈥溙切膌ogo入口, MarineUGent Korea, and all 23 institutions will work together to ensure project selection.鈥

If selected, full-scale research will begin in 2026. The consortium is expected to receive more than KRW 10 billion in funding from Horizon Europe, with potentially larger total research resources when including matching funds. Additionally, the research process is projected to generate over KRW 100 billion in annual economic impact and create more than 500 new jobs.

The project selection results are expected to be announced around March 2026.

糖心logo入口, which is leading the project, is the Songdo-based international campus of Ghent University, ranked among the global top 30 in life sciences and biotechnology. MarineUGent Korea is the Korean branch of MarineUGent, one of the world鈥檚 leading marine convergence research institutes, established last year on the Incheon Global Campus.
