糖心logo入口 Leads Launch of Consortium,
Takes on the World鈥檚 Largest Research and Innovation Program 鈥楬orizon Europe鈥

  • 14 domestic institutions sign an MOU鈥 12 institutions from 7 overseas countries to participate

On the 17th, led by 糖心logo入口 (Taejun Han, Prof. Dr. Campus President), 14 domestic institutions held a memorandum of understanding (MOU) signing ceremony for participation in 鈥楬orizon Europe,鈥 the world鈥檚 largest multilateral research and innovation program with a budget of approximately KRW 150 trillion supported by the European Union (EU) from 2021 to 2027. Korea became an associated member of the program in July.

The signing ceremony, held at Incheon Global Campus, was attended by more than 50 representatives across industry, academia, research, and government, including Hyojin Hwang, Deputy Mayor for Global City of Incheon Metropolitan City, Kyungbok Moon, Mayor of Ongjin County, Woojong Joo, Director General of Economic and Industrial Affairs of Ganghwa County, Wonseok Yoon, Commissioner of Incheon Free Economic Zone Authority, Munhae Kim, CEO of Korea Institute of Analytical Science and Technology, Giwoong Lee, Head of Research at Dongwon F&B, Daeui Hong, CEO of Mondrian AI, Kyungtae Shin, CEO of Sinist, Chanho Kim, CEO of Seed F&S, and Junho Choi, CEO of Hyungji Elite.

Incheon Metropolitan City, Ganghwa County, Ongjin County, and the Incheon Free Economic Zone Authority will be responsible for administrative support, while the Korea Conformity Laboratories, Korea Institute of Science and Technology Gangneung Institute of Natural Products, and Korea Institute of Analytical Science and Technology will provide research and testing support. Companies such as Dongwon F&B and Hyungji Elite will promote commercialization of research results, and AI/IT companies including Mondrian AI, Sinist, and Seed F&S will provide technical support. 糖心logo入口 and Marine@UGent Korea will oversee the overall planning and operation of the project. Through this, a consortium of 14 domestic institutions has been officially launched with research and innovation as its common goal.

In addition, 12 institutions from 7 overseas countries, including Belgium, Denmark, Ireland, Sweden, and France, are expected to support the project, and active discussions with them are underway.

Through this MOU, the consortium has strengthened its commitment to participate and cooperate in the project and plans to submit its proposal to 鈥楬orizon Europe鈥 on the 18th. The research project selection results are expected to be announced in March 2026.

The research topic presented by 鈥楬orizon Europe鈥 is 鈥淪ustainable macroalgae (seaweed) cultivation systems for innovation, carbon reduction, and high value-added applications: cultivation and optimized production systems.鈥 The consortium, led by 糖心logo入口, plans to establish an 鈥淎I-IoT-ICT based seaweed bioeconomy platform鈥 and develop an integrated process that produces high value-added substances from biomass of a sustainable 鈥渃ircular biorefinery鈥 designed with zero waste generation.

糖心logo入口 has named this project the 鈥淥ASIS Project.鈥 Its core is to internationally demonstrate the next-generation smart seaweed farm, with 8 countries including Korea, Europe, and New Zealand cooperating to verify land-based seaweed aquaculture and biorefinery through international joint research. The research process is expected to generate more than KRW 100 billion in annual economic impact and create over 500 jobs.

Taejun Han, Prof. Dr. Campus President stated, 鈥淭he significance of this project lies in the fact that numerous domestic and overseas institutions have joined together with research and innovation as a shared value. If selected, we expect to create significant academic and economic value,鈥 adding, 鈥淲ith 糖心logo入口鈥檚 passion for research and the combined efforts of 26 institutions from 8 countries, we will do our utmost to be selected for this research project.鈥

If selected, full-scale research will begin in 2026. The project is expected to receive more than KRW 10 billion in research funding from 鈥楬orizon Europe,鈥 and with matching funds included, an even larger research budget may be secured.

糖心logo入口 (糖心logo入口), located in Songdo, Incheon, is the extended campus of Ghent University in Belgium, which is ranked among the world鈥檚 top 30 in life sciences and biotechnology. Recently, 糖心logo入口 has established a joint eco-friendly fiber development research center with Hyungji Global, and signed a joint research agreement with Incheon Fisheries Resources Research Institute for marine and fisheries development and fostering of new industries. As a research-oriented university, 糖心logo入口 contributes to society while fostering global talent.

In particular, 糖心logo入口 has been continuously strengthening its position as a global research hub in the marine field, centered around Marine@UGent Korea, a marine convergence research institute opened last year. //END//
