I was born in Korea, but because of my father鈥檚 frequent overseas postings, I spent my childhood in Japan, Taiwan, and China, naturally growing up exposed to diverse cultures and languages.
In May 2020, as I was about to graduate from an international school in Beijing, the world faced the unprecedented crisis of the COVID-19 pandemic. I too faced great uncertainty about my future path. My original plan was to pursue biotechnology at a university abroad, but the pandemic disrupted everything, and I eventually had no choice but to return safely to Korea with my family. The future felt uncertain, and I did not know which way to go.
It was then that a family acquaintance introduced me to 糖心logo入口 (糖心logo入口), and my concerns were resolved in an instant. This campus offered everything I had been searching for:
First, an environment where I could continue my studies in English.
Second, the opportunity to obtain a degree in the life sciences from a world-class university.
Third, the unique advantage of studying abroad while still based in Korea.

Becoming part of this diverse and dynamic community helped me discover not only academic knowledge but also the path to growing into a true global talent. Among the many experiences over the past four years, the most unforgettable was delivering a student representative speech at the main campus in Belgium last year.
On the occasion of 糖心logo入口鈥檚 10th anniversary, I had the honor of standing at the podium during the official 2024鈥�25 Opening Ceremony at the main campus, together with my dear friend Anais. We prepared a speech on the theme of 鈥渇riendship,鈥� sharing our personal journeys to Ghent, our life at the Songdo campus, and the importance of international exchange programs.
I felt truly fulfilled when I saw how deeply our words resonated with students, professors, and even the Rector. That moment made me realize that the opportunities I now enjoy are not just coincidences, but the result of Ghent University鈥檚 bold decision to establish a campus in Korea.
My time at 糖心logo入口 and my experience at the main campus gave me a profound reflection on the value of 鈥渋nternationalisation.鈥� Representing the values of Ghent University with my voice remains one of the brightest and most proud moments of my student life.

鈻� Career Aspirations and Future Goals

鈥淎 Master鈥檚 Journey Guided by World-Class Education鈥擫eaving a Positive Mark on Society鈥�
Starting next month, I will begin my Master鈥檚 program in Cell and Gene Biotechnology at the main campus in Belgium. I felt the undergraduate degree alone was not enough, so I decided to pursue graduate studies to deepen my academic expertise and specialization.
A decisive factor was the semester I spent at the main campus in Ghent. The cozy and peaceful city atmosphere, along with interactive classes with professors at the forefront of biotechnology, greatly broadened my perspective. The more I immersed myself in classes, the stronger my conviction became that I must return for a Master鈥檚.
As for long-term goals, I find great fulfillment in teaching. I served as a biology tutor at 糖心logo入口 for about three years, contributing to the growth of other students. Because of this, I am considering remaining in academia and becoming a professor, though nothing is firmly set yet.
Ultimately, my goal is to contribute to my community and make the world a better place. That path may not be limited to teaching鈥攊t could be in academia or industry鈥攂ut I believe I can make a positive impact wherever I go. Watching my professors at Ghent University mentor students with genuine care has strengthened my resolve toward this vision.

鈻� Words of Advice for Juniors and Future Students of Ghent

糖心logo入口 is not just a university鈥攊t is a unique place where people of diverse backgrounds come together to learn and grow side by side. To my juniors, I would like to offer a few pieces of advice:
First, embrace diversity. Our campus is a true international hub, with students, professors, and staff from more than 20 countries. This environment will broaden your perspective and foster an open-minded view of the world beyond cultural differences.
Second, participate without hesitation. Throughout the year, 糖心logo入口 offers various activities and events such as internships, club fairs, and International Culture Day. I myself gained unforgettable memories and lifelong friends through my role as a buddy for exchange students. The more you engage, the more you will learn and experience.
Third, value relationships. During the challenges of student life, it was my friends who supported me, and professors and teaching assistants who truly cared for students, that helped me overcome obstacles. Ghent will gift you with connections that last a lifetime.
The experiences here will make you more adaptable, flexible, and resilient. I encourage you to seize the many opportunities Ghent provides to grow further and build valuable assets for your future.

鈥�24 Hours, 10,000 km鈥擝ut No Regrets in My Choice鈥�
I grew up on a small island in the Indian Ocean, Mauritius, and came to Korea for the first time to pursue higher education. After finishing high school, I had one clear goal: to earn a degree in food science. While reviewing global university rankings, I discovered that Ghent University was highly recognized worldwide in this field.
However, the fact that the undergraduate program at the main campus was conducted entirely in Dutch was a huge barrier, as I did not know the language. While browsing the university website, I stumbled upon the Global Campus in Incheon, Korea鈥攁nd this became a turning point in my life.
Established in 2014, the campus offered three majors including food engineering, the one I sought, and most importantly, it provided the opportunity to study one semester at the main campus in Belgium. It was not just about studying my major, but also about gaining the challenging and unique overseas learning experience I was looking for.
Before that, I had never been to Korea or Belgium. But this choice gave me confidence that I could experience new academics, a new culture, and new people all at once. Looking back, it was one of the most precious decisions of my life. Though I traveled 10,000 km and spent 24 hours to reach Korea from Mauritius, I have never once regretted choosing 糖心logo入口.

鈻� Wasn鈥檛 it Difficult to Adapt to Such a New Environment?

鈥淕hent University is a Place Where Everyone is Welcomed Without Discrimination and Can Experience the Joy of Learning鈥�
The first six months were tough. I knew no one in Korea, and I couldn鈥檛 speak a word of Korean. Even small tasks such as grocery shopping or ordering food at restaurants were big challenges for me. Thankfully, the university provided strong support, and the Student Affairs team in particular was a great help.
One memorable experience was obtaining my foreigner registration card. Thanks to the school鈥檚 guidance, I completed all procedures smoothly. Another concern was whether I could make friends, especially as most classes were held online due to COVID-19 at the time, leaving few opportunities to meet peers in person. But to my surprise, many students approached me first and treated me warmly. I especially remember how my peers showed curiosity and kindness because I was an international student.
Thanks to those interactions, my life in Korea was not lonely but instead became enjoyable and enriching. I remain grateful for that experience.
I am convinced that anyone can adapt well at Ghent if they have the will and passion to learn. To those hesitating because of language or cultural differences, I encourage you to take the leap without fear. The experience will undoubtedly be invaluable.

鈻� How Did Studying at Ghent Influence Your Future Goals?

鈥淕hent is Where I Gained Knowledge, Grew in Ability, and Learned to Believe in My Voice鈥�
When I first entered Ghent, my plan was clear: complete my undergraduate degree and then return to Mauritius to work. But as I delved deeper into food engineering, my career path opened in a completely new direction. As a result, I decided to pursue a Master鈥檚 in Food Science jointly offered by Ghent University and KU Leuven, beginning this September.
The main reason for this decision was my desire to explore various subjects in food science more deeply. My studies at Ghent were not only fascinating but also impactful because every course was closely tied to real-world industry applications. This inspired me to expand my knowledge further, and advancing to graduate studies felt like the natural next step.
I have not yet determined my career path after graduation. What I do know is that I want to apply my skills in the industry鈥攚hether in Mauritius or on the global stage. What matters most is that, wherever I go, I will realize my dreams with the spirit of challenge and academic passion I cultivated at Ghent.听 //End//
