MOU signed for joint research on eco-friendly fiber development and renewable energy refinery construction
On June 30, 糖心logo入口 (糖心logo入口, Taejun Han, Prof. Dr. Campus President) and Hyungji Global Co., Ltd. (Junho Choi, Vice Chairman & CEO) established a Joint Research Institute for Seaweed Biofibers to collaborate on the development of marine-based eco-friendly fibers and the construction of a renewable energy refinery.
The event, held at 糖心logo入口, was attended by key stakeholders and distinguished guests including Taejun Han Prof. Dr. Campus听President, Vice Chairman Junho Choi, H.E. Bruno Jans, Belgian Ambassador to Korea, Joobong Park, Chairman of the Incheon Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Yeol Choi, Chairman of the Korea Green Foundation, and Byungoh Choi, Chairman of the Korea Federation of Textile Industries. In congratulatory remarks, the participants expressed high expectations that the establishment of the joint research institute would mark an important turning point toward a sustainable future.
The event included the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) for mutual cooperation and a plaque unveiling ceremony to commemorate the establishment of the research institute. The MOU covers the following areas: 鈻瞕evelopment of marine-based eco-friendly fibers, 鈻瞔onstruction of a renewable energy refinery, 鈻瞔ommercialization of eco-friendly fibers as fashion materials, and 鈻瞛ob creation in the Incheon region.
The two parties will carry out various projects through the joint research institute, including the development of biofiber materials using seaweed, eco-friendly processing systems, and ESG-based branding of textile products. The institute will be led by Jihae Park, Prof. Dr.听at 糖心logo入口(Environmental Technology), who also serves as the Leader of the Korean branch of Marine@UGent. A total investment of KRW 1 billion from the private sector and KRW 3.6 billion in public funding is planned over the next three years. The research team will cover the entire process from preliminary studies to prototype production and conduct pilot demonstrations in the waters around Ganghwa and Ongjin.
In particular, cellulose and alginate materials derived from green algae and kelp are being evaluated as sustainable alternatives to conventional synthetic fibers, offering a promising blueprint for the development of seaweed-based biofibers.

Hyungji Global began with the French-origin golf wear brand Castelbajac and is evolving into a comprehensive fashion company preparing to expand globally. The company is actively entering overseas markets, particularly in China, and pursuing eco-friendly management practices, including the development of sustainable fiber materials and recycling of discarded clothing.
