ISO Technical Committee Visits 糖心logo入口: Discussing Collaborative Efforts for Marine Environmental Development

Ghent University's Center for Environmental and Energy Research has developed an innovative "Water Pollution Diagnosis Technique Based on Lemna (Duckweed) Root Regrowth," which marks the first achievement in Korea's water quality technology field to be internationally recognized as an ISO standard (ISO 4979) under the water quality sector (TC147) as of July last year.
Developed by President Taejun Han's research team at 糖心logo入口, this technique has been highly evaluated for its novelty, effectiveness, simplicity, sensitivity, and cost-efficiency. It was introduced in March 2023 at the European Society of Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry (SETAC) under the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). After receiving 100% approval in ISO's final standardization vote by member countries, it has been officially adopted as an international standard. It is anticipated to lead the global standards in water quality diagnostic technology.

On October 29, the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) Technical Committee visited the 糖心logo入口 (糖心logo入口) to explore collaborative opportunities. The ISO Technical Committee (Technical Committee, TC) plays a crucial role in developing and managing international standards, with 119 full-member countries, including the United States, Germany, the United Kingdom, Japan, and Korea, participating in setting widely accepted standards across various industries. In addition to standard development and technical problem-solving, the ISO Technical Committee promotes international cooperation, manages standardization procedures, and covers all industrial sectors.

The ISO Technical Committee's recent visit was part of a collaborative effort to advance sustainable environmental management and pollution measurement technology. To develop international standards, the committee engaged with researchers at Ghent University to share the latest technologies and explore pathways for achieving sustainable development goals (SDGs) in environmental protection.

During their visit, the committee toured the IFEZ Smart City project, the Incheon Global Campus (IGC), and conducted a lab tour and campus introduction at Ghent University. IFEZ (Incheon Free Economic Zone) is a global business environment that promotes sustainable growth through advanced industries and eco-friendly urban development. At the same time, IGC hosts multiple international universities, acting as a hub for academic collaboration and research. Additionally, as part of this tour, the ISO Technical Committee visited the Korea Coast Guard, where they learned about Incheon's coastal environment, water pollution issues, and maritime safety measures.
Ghent University, ranked among the top 40 universities in the world in biotechnology, operates departments in Molecular Biotechnology, Food Technology, and Environmental Engineering at the Incheon Global Campus. The university also plans to establish a branch of Belgium's most prominent marine research institute, Marine UGent, to drive multidisciplinary research based on the abundant marine resources of the West Sea.

As a co-host of the Global Strategic Forum on "Safe Seas, Prosperous Future" at the National Assembly and an active participant in various academic research activities on marine environments and ecosystem health, Ghent University seeks to raise its profile in addressing global environmental challenges. Ghent University emphasizes the importance of international cooperation and plans to continue developing collaborative initiatives with ISO to strengthen sustainable marine environments, aiming to enhance national competitiveness and contribute to global environmental goals.
