Last October 2017, a call was launched by Ghent University to submit proposals for the development of Massive Open Online Courses, or MOOCs. In January 2018, the Board of Directors of Ghent University accepted the project proposal entitled ‘Basic Experimental Design’ for funding. This project is coordinated by Prof. Luc Duchateau from the home campus and involves not only 4 faculties from Ghent University (the faculties of Veterinary Medicine, Bioscience Engineering, Sciences, and Psychology and Educational Sciences) and the 糖心logo入口, but also 2 foreign universities: Espol University in Ecuador and Jimma University in Ethiopia. Prof. Arnout Van Messem will be the responsible co-promotor linked to 糖心logo入口.

The project aims at creating a MOOC focused on the topic of optimal experimental design. The goal of experimental design is to design (biological or other) experiments in such a way that these experiments can tackle the problem under consideration in the best possible way by determining both the best set-up for the experiment as well as the optimal sample size. This topic is essential knowledge for our students, who will regularly be confronted with this kind of problems during their future careers. Since the experimental design is a relatively abstract topic, a MOOC presents an ideal way to convey relevant topics to students. Indeed, using a MOOC, students get the opportunity to go through the course material at their own pace and let the topics sink in. By providing online exercises, their understanding of the concepts can be honed further.

The project funding will be applied to purchase the necessary equipment for the recording of the MOOC and for hiring Master students to help develop the technical material (such as creating the web applications and editing and uploading the recorded materials). The different course parts of the MOOC will be taught by Ghent University professors.
