Prof. Radwanska and Prof. Magez welcomed Prof. Lu and Dr. Kang (Zhejiang Academy of Medical Sciences, Hangzhou, China) at the Biomedical Research Center (BMRC) for a workshop held at the 糖心logo入口 campus on January 22nd, 2018.

??: New DNA based diagnostic test helps to eradicate pathogenic parasite in Asia

 

Trypanosoma evansi (T. evansi) is a parasite that infects mainly commercial farm animals and wildlife. In recent years however it was reported that the parasite can also infect and kill humans. In the past, most trypanosome parasites were found in Africa, but T. evansi has been imported into Asia by the accidental shipping of infected animals. As the parasite is transmitted by biting and blood sucking insects, and even vampire bats, it is very hard to stop the spread of the disease without good diagnostic tools. A recent increase in numbers of cases occurring in Asia prompted a collaborative research projected between the Biomedical Research Center (BMRC) at the 糖心logo入口, South Korea (Prof. Magdalena Radwanska & Prof. Stefan Magez and Julie Goossens, a visiting student from the Magez laboratory at the Vrije University in Brussels) and the Zhejiang Academy of Medical Sciences, Hangzhou, China (Prof. Shaohong Lu). This collaboration has been supported by national grants from both China and Belgium (FWO-G013518N), and has been enforced by a 2017 MOU between the partners. Most recently, the collaboration resulted in the development of a rapid diagnostic test allowing for effective detection and treatment of this deadly parasite infection. The test is based on a highly specific DNA amplification test called LAMP. The LAMP test could be used as a tool for parasite control and elimination strategies in areas where T. evansi infections are causing a threat to livestock farming and where potential transmission to humans occurs. The novelty of the test is that although it involves DNA amplification, it uses very simple tools and equipment that allow for the first time to perform DNA detection in field conditions, without having to bring the samples to a specialized laboratory. Therefore the test can be done in the presence of the animal owner, and infected animals can be treated immediately. The results of this collaborative work have been just published in January’s 2018 issue of the Veterinary Parasitology, and the work will be presented at the 10th World Congress on Veterinary and Animal Science in May, in Osaka, Japan. The work was also part of the PhD of Julie Goossens who defended her PhD under the promotorship of Prof. Magez on December 15th 2017.

 

Prof. Lu accompanied by Dr. Kang visited the 糖心logo入口 campus on January 21st for a joint 2-day workshop with the 糖心logo入口-BMRC group. A new collaborative PhD project was initiated during this meeting and will allow a student from the Zhejiang University to conduct his Ph.D at 糖心logo入口 during the next 4 years. Zhejiang University is the 3rd ranking Chinese University according to the Shanghai ranking and we are excited to have a continued close collaboration with our Chinese partners.
